Eventi – a Kimpton Hotel in Manhattan: The Word Is Out

It seems all of New York is talking about and flocking to Eventi. Our boutique Kimpton Hotel has enlivened an already vibrant neighborhood, adding artful public spaces, luxurious accommodations and extraordinary meeting and event space. From the adjacent new urban plaza — a New York City park — to delicious dining and four-star services, Eventi is an experience not to be missed.

Examiner.com: Eventi - Best Suites in New York City - New York City is space-challenged, yet high-energy. The best way to maximize your stay is to spread out a little in a suite. The true definition of a hotel suite is simply a connected series of rooms. A suite can mean the room has a separate living area or it can mean 1,000 square-feet of sprawling living space. For my two-part series on the best suites in New York City, I've chosen a suite on both ends of the spectrum. PART ONE - EVENTI: The Eventi hotel is super chic in Chelsea. It's difficult for a hotel in Manhattan to not be close to something incredible, but regardless, Eventi is a short cab ride to everything good. When you think of an intimately posh soiree, the Eventi's lobby could be the backdrop. In fact, the hotel hosts wine tastings in the lobby. Hotel reception tends to be aloof, but mostly pleasant. An unexpected gift in the lobby is a fanciful tall cabinet which opens to display a lit garden mural. I opened it several times during my stay, just to try to figure out why it was there. My conclusion? It's a bit of fun that I shouldn't question. PREMIER ONE-BEDROOM SUITE: My suite New York experience at Eventi revolved around a premier one-bedroom suite with an inspiring city view. My husband (who always travels with me) and our son (who rarely gets the chance) were immediately drawn to the floor-to-ceiling windows. When the outside was taken in, attention turned to the room. Our 500 square-foot room consisted of a long entry hallway, a sitting room with 37" LG flat panel TV, a separate bedroom with an ipod dock, and a bathroom with a unique shower room. Accommodations this size are excellent entry-level suites. In size, they have about 150 square-feet more room than a standard room, but the key advantage is in the partition between rooms. Traveling with a teenage boy like we were is best done with separate spaces. Although the super stylish couch was a bit like beautiful peep-toe heels that are best worn for short periods of time, the bed was heavenly. Frette linens rested lightly on our signature Kimpton bed. After a night at "Wicked," the bed was icing on the Magnolia cupcake. The next morning I burrowed in that blissful bed and looked out the window at the imposing (yet exciting) space-scrapers so long I wasn't able to soak in the deep tub. Sigh. I did luxuriate under the rainfall showerhead, though. In our suite, the glass half-wall that semi-encloses the shower, also houses the tub in a wet room. BEYOND THE SUITE: As we departed the suite for our day, we made a quick tour of the dining area and meeting rooms. Of note is the rooftop verandah. On a warm day, breakfast or a reception would be ideal here for a taste of residential downtown life. I imagine dining is an experience at Bar Basque. I re-lived Star Trek: The Experience as I stepped out of the elevator. Designed by Syd Mead (clearly a sci-fi fan), the restaurant is like leaving this planet for the joys of pod life, mysteriously lit slanted red walls and low ceilings. An outdoor patio brings guests back to New York City with greenery, comfy outdoor furniture and pig tables (tables in the shape of a pig, not made from pig). Although I did not get to see the hotel's no-holds-barred signature suite, the Eventi suite, I do recommend browsing the website for photos. MY RECOMMENDATION: For most, money is a factor. An entry suite is the solution for those traveling in a set of 3 without the cost of another room. Or, use it for more space for the two of you. Eventi's one-bedroom suite is comfortable, functional and tasteful. Book it.

Symphony Magazine: Big Screen, Great Outdoors - The Chamber Orchestra of New York headed to the great outdoors on October 6, when it played a free concert at the Eventi Hotel's al fresco plaza. Nestled adjacent to the hotel in Manhattan's gritty, fragrant wholesale Flower District, the Big Screen Plaza features waterworks, greenery, exhibition areas, seating, and- true to its name- a 30- by 15- foot HD screen on which live events are projected. Led by founder Salvatore Di Vittorio, the Chamber Orchestra of New York performed selections from their debut CD on Naxos, as well as works by Vivaldi, Corelli, Respighi, and Mozart. Di Vittorio established the orchestra in 2006 to feature young professional musicians in the early stages of their careers; programs center on the Italian classical repertoire. The orchestra played at the edge of a reflecting pool, but the splash it made was purely aesthetic - for appreciative crowds.

Oyster.com: Santa Paws and More: The Best Holiday Hotel Features - Traveling during the holiday season is as old as the holidays themselves - literally, if you ask anyone who owns a manger in Bethlehem. But just because people hit the road doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to feel the spirit of the season wherever they go. To help get you feeling festive, here are some killer seasonal perks that hotels have provided to their guests. Santa Paws at the Eventi - The holidays are for everyone: not just adults and children, but for pets as well. This past weekend, the second annual Santa Paws event at the Eventi Hotel in Manhattan treated four-legged guests to a visit from St. Nick. There was no shortage of festive dog biscuits or fresh water bowls as pets took their turns explaining to Santa why they can't seem to stop digging up the front yard. Kimpton properties such as the Eventi are already well-known for being super pet-friendly, so arranging a pet photo opp with Santa and his helper is simply par for the course. Of course, everyone was on their best behavior - including owners, who were treated to candy canes and delicious hot chocolate. If this was any indication of who made the "nice" list, Santa is going to be delivering a ton of bones this year.

NYTimes.com: Spare Times: For Children, for Aug. 12-18. "What's Your Favorite Space?" - On Wednesday scores of children will dress potatoes at the Eventi Hotel in Chelsea. But don't expect butter, sour cream or other condiments. This project isn't gastronomical but astronomical. "The American Society of Mechanical Engineers will have kids working on designing their own spacesuits and testing them in the hotel plaza," said Meghan Guethe, exhibits manager at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va. "They can use four layers in a variety of materials. And they're going to use potatoes as astronauts." Preparing those spud pilots for imaginary liftoff is part of "What's Your Favorite Space?," an expo that will turn the hotel plaza into a miniature Kennedy Space Center. In addition to robots, scale models, interactive exhibits and NASA film footage shown on the plaza's LED screen, it will feature guests who easily outshine the technology: the Atlantis crew from the space shuttle program's final flight last month. Christopher J. Ferguson, commander; Douglas G. Hurley, pilot; and Sandra H. Magnus and Rex J. Walheim, mission specialists, will appear at the beginning of the event, while another celebrity will visit toward the end: Elmo from "Sesame Street," which recently filmed an episode at Kennedy. Children will also play at being astronauts themselves. In Moonbase Alpha, a 3-D multiplayer online simulation game, "two or three team members are on a Moon base, and a meteorite impact cripples the life support," Ms. Guethe said. "They have to work together to restore the oxygen." Young space fans can get hands-on NASA experience through a link to the Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. Seated at a screen and using controls, they will manipulate a model of a NASA rover at the Ames testing site. Other attractions include Journey to Tomorrow, a 53-foot trailer with learning stations and a Moon rock; demonstrations from Astro Camp, in which children use materials like balloons, fishing line and an air cannon to mimic launchings; the chance to create spacecraft and rovers from Lego, above; and NASA artifacts like spacesuits, tools, a food tray and even a makeup kit. "I think it was to make sure she was camera ready," Ms. Guethe said of the astronaut who used it. "One of an astronaut's duties, even in space, is to connect with the public." (Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Eventi Plaza, 851 Avenue of the Americas, at 29th Street, Chelsea, eventihotel.com/outdoor-plaza/index.html; free.)

Conde Nast Traveller: Chelsea Eventi Hotel - Sometimes the appeal of a neighbourhood hotel has less to do with its location and more to do with getting a nicer room and better deal than staying in a typical tourist zone. Such is the case with Eventi, a new property from the Kimpton hotel group in ‘North Chelsea,' a nondescript stretch of Avenue of the Americas that feels quite removed from the restaurants and shops, galleries and people-watching of Chelsea proper. Situated on the first 23 floors of an ungainly 52-storey skyscraper that towers over everything around it, Eventi has a gleaming marble lobby, original artwork in a neo-surrealist style by Barbara Nessim, and a proper gym and spa. There are also a couple of genuinely interesting dining and drinking options: FoodParc, a food hall (one of the city's latest obsessions) where you can grab some Asian dumplings or a burger with artisanal bacon; and Bar Basque, a modern Spanish restaurant with space-ship décor by Blade Runner set designer Syd Mead. Ultimately, though, the reason to book Eventi is the guest rooms, which are done in a pleasantly masculine style (dark-brown striped wallpaper, leather armchairs, padded headboards in grey wool) and have expansive views through floor-to-ceiling windows and swanky marble bathrooms.

FiveStarAlliance.com: Get Pampered at the Eventi Hotel After the NYC Marathon - Looking for a place to crash after the NYC marathon on November 6? We know just the place. Since it opened last year, Eventi has been getting lots of buzz for its warm service, eco-friendly spa, fitness center with city views, and complimentary morning coffee/tea bar. Here's what's included in the "NYC Marathon Package" at Eventi: * 50 minute Custom Massage* Kerstin Florian Futz Balm- soothing relief for race-tired feet. * Menthol, rosemary, pine, and lavender provide nourishing and protecting care for the feet. * $50 food and beverage credit * Rooms with tubs include Kerstin Florian Eucalyptus Bath to soothe tired, aching muscles, feet, and joints.

About.com: Eventi in a Nutshell: One of the city's new breed of design hotels, Eventi opened in June 2010 on Sixth Avenue (only out-of-towners refer to the street as Avenue of the Americas). Its public spaces seem designed to turn strangers into friends; there's mingling in its FoodParc, BeerParc, outdoor plaza, guests-only veranda, and beside Bar Basque's do-it-yourself wine dispenser. As appealing to business travelers as vacationers, Eventi features several popular elements of its parent company, Kimpton Hotels. The daily wine hour from 5 to 6 pm, the pet-friendliness, and the element of cool are all here. Perhaps you should be as well. Accommodations at Eventi: Eventi's modern, sophisticated style trumps Kimpton's signature funhouse decor. Guest rooms start on the 6th floor, go up to the 23rd, and have floor-to-ceiling windows. Whether facing east or west, they overlook an urban tableau of gritty buildings that evokes the opening credits of a film noir. Premiere suites have separate bed and living rooms. King rooms measure 300 square feet, with ceilings that stretch to 9.5 feet. Units are well-designed for work and play (wi-fi is free to guests who join Kimpton InTouch, also free). We like the eco-sensitive design, Frette linens, and marble bathrooms with Etro toiletries. Dining at Eventi: There are two Eventi eateries: FoodParc is an urban, high-tech (order via touch screen) version of a suburban mall food court with four food stands. Once patrons gather their grub, they can eat indoors or out. New York Magazine described Bar Basque as looking "like some recently refurbished, postmillennial version of an old Tunnel of Love amusement-park ride" but gave props to chef Yuhi Fujinaga for delivering a "tightly focused and surprisingly well executed" menu, adding, "The only problem is the boom-era prices." If neither place suits your taste or budget, you've got 24,000 other NYC restaurants to sample. Destination Weddings at Eventi: Eventi's light-filled Ventana ballroom is a flexible space that can hold more than 400 guests. It can also be divided into smaller spaces. Should you need a more intimate room, there are 16 to choose from, including ones with outdoor terraces. The unique thing about the grand ballroom is that it overlooks the big screen plaza, a huge outdoor screen that plays a mix of video art and cable TV. Couples who make a wedding video can have it projected onscreen, with sound piped into the ballroom. Wedding catering is done through China Grill Management, which offers a broader menu selection than the on-site eateries. Romance at Eventi: Eventi maintains a clubby, guests-only outdoor veranda on its fifth floor where you can have drinks and food delivered via room service. Couples considering a honeymoon or romantic getaway can opt for a package such as "I Swing for Love," which includes accommodations, a two-hour class for two at The Trapeze School on West 30th Street between 10th and 11th avenues, a T-shirt, and dinner for two at Bar Basque. Note: Eventi is LGBT-friendly. New York state voted in favor of marriage equality, and same-sex couples who want to marry and honeymoon at Eventi will be welcomed. Activities at Eventi: An urban hotel, Eventi contains a three-treatment-room spa and 24-hour fitness center with Precor equipment. There is no pool. So the hotel basically cossets couples in comfort until they emerge to explore Manhattan together. Transport to the city's popular spots via subway, bus, and taxi is readily available. Have wedding cash burning a hole in your pockets? Eventi is four blocks from Macy's Herald Square, the brand's flagship and the world's largest department store. The Empire State Building, where you can observe the city from its 86th floor, is a few blocks beyond. It's a memorable spot for a kiss or a proposal. Nearby Eventi: Don't expect to find New York sizzle in the immediate area. On a walk you'll pass pizza joints and small stores that sell cheap wholesale imports before you reach something interesting. To the east is Koreatown, praised by foodies and known for affordable fare. At Madison Square Garden, four blocks away, you may score tickets for anything from a major concert to a sporting event. (NB: Buy from the box office only; scalpers often hawk counterfeit tickets.) Or head west toward the river to experience the High Line, New York's unique elevated urban park. En route you'll pass downtown art galleries. Drawbacks at Eventi: Some couples may consider Eventi's location less than desirable. It's not in a particularly bad or unsafe area; it's simply undistinguished. We also weren't enamored with Eventi's dining options. FoodParc, with its noise, crowds, and go-get-it-yourself system is hardly romantic. Nonetheless, casual couples may like FoodParc and its spirited companion, BeerParc, "a seasonal selection of brews and bites" on the large outdoor plaza. One other cavil: Bar Basque's futuristic design doesn't compensate for inadequate ventilation; we visited when the restaurant was closed and the aroma of last night's dinner still lingered. Is Eventi Right for You?: If innovative contemporary style, luxury touches, and views from up high are requirements, Eventi can meet your needs. The median age of visitors is around 35. Art lovers will appreciate Eventi's collection of original, sensual, textured work by the highly respected artist Barbara Nessim; it enhances public spaces and guest rooms. Video art, an overhead photo mural of Central Park in the lobby as well as a curiosity cabinet with a Narnia mural, and whimsical effects elsewhere in the hotel, including a glass cabinet filled with illuminated lampshades (but no lamps!), express Eventi's fresh, creative character. Exclusive Magazine: Eventi Hotel one of the Kimpton Group of hotels, located in Manhattan within the Chelsea neighborhood. This sleek, modern hotel occupies an entire city block on Sixth Avenue between West 29th and 30th Streets - just a couple of blocks from Macy's and The Empire State Building. Broadway is only a short walk away and we went to see the excellent Sister Act, booking our tickets through the Broadway Inbound system (see Fact Box). The Eventi building is something of an architectural highlight of the area and includes a block-through open outdoor plaza with water features and public seating with a 22.5ft-wide outdoor multi-media screen adjacent to the plaza for both public and private events. The hotel has 292 guestrooms including 55 suites - some with outdoor terraces. It also has stylish conference and event space, a 1,400 square foot fitness centre and spa with three treatment rooms. By New York standards our room was very spacious, with two Queen-sized beds, massive plasma TV and a massive walk-in shower. We were on the 8th floor, but it was quiet and very comfortable. An event at the hotel meant we couldn't try the dining room, but they own a food market next door which served everything from bagel brekkies to burgers, Chinese meals and Italian fare and was cheap and cheerful. Examiner.com: Plan Your Next New York City Staycation At The Eventi Hotel (June 2011)
Expect the unexpected at Eventi (851 Avenue of the Americas), a new Kimpton Hotel on the edge of Chelsea close to Herald Square and Madison Square Garden. The boutique property's intriguing nature theme is evident from the lobby's ceiling mural of Central Park and the "curiosity cabinet" painted with flowers. Eventi recently celebrated its first anniversary and the playful, "surprises around the corner" concept continues as guests enter the elevator where the tropical fish on the monitor make you feel like you're in an aquarium. Located in the flower district, Eventi's 292 guest rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and feature lamps designed to look like flowers and custom artwork by Barbara Nessim. City view king rooms facing the east have a breathtaking view of the Empire State building. Celeb guests and corporate clients lavish in luxury in the 1,392-square-foot Eventi suite connected to a 6,000-square-foot outdoor, L-shaped veranda. The Veranda is open to all guests when the Eventi suite isn't occupied. In keeping with the Kimpton brand pet-friendly policy, select rooms are available for guests traveling with their furry friends. And for guests who'd like a little company during their stay, the "Guppie love" program will deliver a goldfish in a bowl to your room. Other signature Kimpton incentives include free Wifi for Kimpton Rewards members (it's free to sign up) and a complimentary wine hour every day from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and coffee and tea every morning. To unwind, try an Urban Therapy Massage with organic aromatherapy essential oils at Spa at Eventi on the fifth floor. Bar Basque and Food Parc Even if you're not a guest at Eventi, don't miss the opportunity to dine at Bar Basque. The modern, multi-level restaurant's stark red-and-white futuristic setting was created and conceptualized by Syd Mead of "Blade Runner" fame. The Jeffrey Chodorow (China Grill Management) eatery features an impressive selection of 32 wines by the glass and tantalizing, authentic Spanish cuisine with a modern twist. Highlights include pintxos (tapas): spicy fried green Spanish olives, wild mushroom croquettes, and spicy garlic shrimp with chickpeas. Make a reservation for dinner or nosh and sip cocktails at the lounge. For those in the mood for a quick bite, Food Parc is a 20,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor eatery attached to the hotel that serves everything from burgers to dim sum. The outdoor space also houses a new beer garden and the Big Screen Plaza, a curated screen project that shows independent short films and music videos.

Oyster.com: Exlusive Photos Of Our New Favorite Outdoor Drinking Spot In NYC: BeerParc (June 2011)
When we attended the opening of Eventi Hotel's FoodParc in September 2010, we heard a lot about a not-yet-opened outdoor area that would feature gourmet food carts and a summer movie series. There's little in life we enjoy more than eating and drinking outside in the warm weather, so last week we moseyed out way over to BeerParc - opened at long last in late May - to check out the scene. Here's a quick rundown: The Food: Food stands with upscale beer garden fare from well-known chefs, including Ed Brown's Chower House and Zak Pelaccio of Fatty Crab. The Beer: Five brews from 10 taps (Magic Hat #9, Radeberger Pilsner, Tucher Helles Hefeweizen, Brooklyn Lager, and Southampton Publick House Double White Ale), plus a canned beer selection that includes Heineken, Guiness, and Model Especial. The Tickets: Line up to buy them before you get your beers and food. Each ticket is $3, and you'll need two tickets for every beer and one to four for the food and non-alcoholic drinks.

Inside Weddings: Down The Isle (Summer 2011)
The Urban Oasis. The dynamic energy of the Chelsea district of Manhattan is captured handsomely in this chic new addition to the famous neighborhood. Opened in 2010, the boutique Eventi hotel commands an entire city block and includes a stunning indoor-outdoor plaza complete with art installations and event seating. Fifty-three suites are counted among the hotel's 292 rooms, and the warm textures of the building's interior design are a stylish contrast to the contemporary lines of the overall architecture. Walls of walnut and furnishings of leather add richness to marble floors and bronze accents, while floor-to-ceiling windows drench accommodations in light. Event spaces include the Ventana Ballroom and a lovely wraparound verandah with views of Sixth Avenue and the New York City skyline. Located near some of Manhattan's most exciting attractions, the Eventi is a stylish choice for a metropolitan honeymoon. Eventihotel.com, 866.996.8396.

Time Out New York.com: Travel & Hotels: Eventi (May 2011)
This modern 23-floor hotel takes a playful approach to interior design, planting unexpected features in the lobby - a large-scale reproduction of 19th-century British artist Thomas Benjamin Kennington's Autumn peeks out tantalizingly from behind velvet drapes, for instance. Managed by Kimpton, which is known for its informal, friendly ethos, flamboyant décor and nic perks like free evening wine and cheese gatherings, Eventi falls into the moderate price category, yet accommodations are surprisingly luxurious. All of the spacious rooms (which feel even more open thanks to floor-to-ceiling outlooks) have king-size beds, outfitted with dapper gray fabric headboards and Frette linens. Cool marble bathrooms are stocked with swanky Etro products. At this pet-friendly property, dogs can curl up on cute bone-motif beds and dine from a special gourmet menu - hopefully your pooch won't get too used to ground lamb shoulder with couscous, cauliflower and gravy. Humans can choose between the sprawling, futuristic Bar Basque, designed by Blade Runner set designer Syd Mead, and Jeffrey Chodorow's FoodParc, a high-tech, upscale take on a shopping-mall food court. There's also an onsite spa. Rooms: 292.

TravelAge West.com: Where To Stay In New York (May 2011)
Eventi, which opened last April, is Kimpton Hotel & Restaurants' newest boutique property in New York. The 292-room property occupies a unique location in northern Chelsea and is located within walking distance to New York's Theater District and Macy's. Like Kimpton's other properties throughout the U.S., Eventi possesses a unique design and sensibility all its own - without losing those much-desired touches that define a Kimpton stay, such as complimentary coffee, tea and a wine hour every night. In keeping with the brand's famous pet-friendly initiatives, two small bowls filled with water and dog food are placed next to the front door. Guestrooms at the Eventi are thoughtfully designed and outfitted with all the amenities that both business and leisure clients crave - from luxurious Frette bed linens and leopard-printed terrycloth bathrobes to expansive floor-to-ceiling windows offering optimal views of the city. King Rooms measure 275 square feet, while Queen Rooms with two queen-size beds measure 325 square feet. My Executive One-Bedroom Suite, measuring 400 square feet, featured a comfortable parlor area with a sofa bed, coffee table, honor bar and a large work desk.

Fodors: New York City Hotels (April 2011)
The newest Kimpton property to grace New York City, the Eventi adds a touch of hotel style just below Penn Station in an area desperately in need of new hotel options. The lobby features ornate teak woodwork, marble floors, and giant botanical artwork. A complimentary happy hour between 5 and 6 pm every evening brings hotel guests to the ground floor in droves before they hit the town for dinner. Rooms are spacious…, with comfortable beds, oversize bathrooms, and Frette linens on the beds. The hotel has invested heavily in dining options, pairing up with restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow on two concepts. Foodparc is a modern food court adjacent to the hotel with eight kiosks featuring everything from dim sum to burgers, plus copious outdoor dining space (a real rarity in congested Midtown), and Bar Basque is a futuristic eatery on the second floor featuring a Spanish menu and décor by Syd Mead, who designed the sets for the original Blade Runner movie. An environmentally conscious hotel chain, Kimpton is promising full LEED certification for the Eventi by 2012.

Bloomberg's BusinessWeek: The Eventi: Kimpton's Hotel Long Shot (December 2010)
When potential guests arrived at the Eventi, they discovered a luxe retreat with hand-carved Indian paneling and whimsical pieces by artist Barbara Nessim scattered throughout the premises. It was warm and comfy, as Kimpton founder Bill Kimpton liked his boutique hotels to be. Mathes personally tried out every chair in the building. His favorite: a red leather number in the three-room, fifth-floor Veranda Suite, which rents for $5,000 a night. He interviewed every candidate for a job, meeting them six at a time. If prospective employees struck him as even slightly rude, he crossed them off the list.
